Here's how I got my AT
trail name! My little hiking snowman scraped together with the less
than adequate first snow flurry in March 2005.

Problem with Elevation Graph.
It appears that moving THE Databook to the free hosting from GoDaddy has broken the elevation graph - probably due to the way the banner is added.
I'll take a look at this once I get some time, but I suspect it may be disabled until another host is found for it. Sorry 'bout that, let's cross fingers it works out.

THE DataBook is moving.
The domain that THE Databook has been resting its weary boots on is closing down shortly, so once again it has to trek on over to a new location. The new place is hosted for free by GoDaddy which unfortunately means that we have to put up with an ad-banner across the top of the page (both onscreen and when printed). Hopefully it won't affect the running of the site.
As well as the move, I have just finished a massive update to THE Databook which has added some of the long-awaited features that I'd been planning on implementing. I've also done a humongous tidying job on the source code ready for someone to take over the hosting and development of the site in the future. I've run out of time now for doing any further development, so if you're interested in getting involved, or hosting the site, please get in touch.

THE DataBook IS NOW OPEN.
OK...OK, sorry for the confusion here, but I've just found that I have some other webspace where I can host The DataBook for a little while longer. Primarily I have put it back online so that prospective new owners can see how it works, as I still won't have the necessary time to do any real development work on it myself, but I am happy that the data it contains is useable again for everyone. Thanks for stopping by.

THANK YOU ALL FOR STOPPING BY. THE DataBook IS NOW CLOSED.
Folks, I haven't had much luck getting the server back online. There also hasn't been much contact in regard to taking over the project either, so apologies for the rather abrupt discontinuation of service, but I won't be trying to bring the server back online. It's been fun while it lasted, and I'd like to have made it a success and say THANKS to everyone that helped me during my hike, but alas it was not to be. Enjoy your hikes, and check out the new Appalachian Pages book from Whiteblaze.

FOR SALE
With the holidays come and gone I have been mulling over my activities for the coming year, and some changes that I plan will sadly not make it possible for me to continue hosting THE Databook. Sooo, if a well-intentioned hiking enthusiast is interested in taking the project on and moving it to the next stage, please get in touch.

A FIRST TIME FOR
EVERYTHING!
I have never been
much interested in politics, but I have for many years been interested
in the state of the world and the environment. And, for good
or bad, America has a significant influence in western society. For
this reason, after much reading and youTube watching, I feel it is
worth promoting the campaign for Ron Paul, so I have dedicted the
'image' of the month to him. Be part of it!

GOOD LUCK to 2007
NOBO's
Some will have
started already and are already traversing the peaks, but for many it
is the time where months, or even years, of planning will be put into
practice. Good luck to all hikers heading out onto them hills, you have
a beautiful time ahead of you. Look forward to hell on earth, 'cos for
many it's going to eat you up and spit you out, but no matter how far
you get ... go out there and enjoy it.

THIS and THAT
Just thought I'd
clarify that THIS 'In the Hikerbox Today' section gives more
substantial news items that may have some impact on your use of THE
Databook, or to let you know of major events or changes here at
HIKERBOX.net or even to ask for your help.
If you're looking
for smaller snippets or comments about what's happening, then THAT
'Database Blog' button at the top right of the page is the place to go.
You can also leave comment there about our website or just say HI.
I've hidden the
items from 2006. You can see them again by clicking the link below. If
you click the link a second time it will hide them once again.
Thanks for stopping
by, let me know if there's anything more I can do for you.

Back at Hikerbox HQ
Unhappily I have now
left the hills behind and have returned to work..ack!..ack! I'll be
updating the section data over the next few days and hope to begin
coding some more databook features soon... once the jet-lag has worn
off.
Once again, a BIG
thank you to everyone who helped me during my hiking, it is very much
appreciated. And HELLO to the hikers I met while we suffered the
Georgian rain and dodged the bears.

Weird Stuff
Does weird stuff
happen sometimes while you are changing settings on THE Databook? Maybe
you've told it to show Southbound and it switches back to Northbound,
etc..
This is likely due
to a number of people using the site at the same time, all changing
settings to test the features. Don't worry, when I've added the user
system, registered users will be able to keep their own settings and
avoid this problem.

Skilled programmer
required to work on an e-mail processor for hikerbox.net. If there are
any MS Windows programmers who would like to work on this project,
please get in touch for more details. I would prefer this to be written
in Visual Basic but I could possibly be convinced to use another
language. Alas I can only offer you the satisfaction of being involved
as payment for your contribution.

What is THE Databook™?
Thru-Hiker Electronic Databook, or
THE Databook for brevity, is an online data listing of trail features
for all long distance hikers enjoying the wonders and struggles of
being in nature. The idea was borne during my Thru-Hike of the
Appalachian Trail in 2005 and is now in alpha development phase -
meaning it doesn't work too well ;-)
How much does it cost?
It's FREE (for now). This is
my way of 'paying it forward', an attitude you quickly adopt while
hiking the AT because there's no way of 'paying-it-back' to the many
people who put time, effort and money into helping the hikers complete
their mammoth undertaking.
The intention is to keep the
site as free access during it's development phase to encourage hikers
to participate in its development and suggest features to benefit
everyone. Once the site is fully functioning and all the trail data has
been entered (initially focussing on the Appalachian Trail) I will more
than likely be adding some sort of 'payment' system.
Why is it likely to turn into a
paid-access website?
There are many, many people
who work dilligently to maintain the trails that we trample underfoot.
This requires tools, fuel and beer - OK, maybe they supply the tools
and fuel themselves, but someone has to support the beer purchases! :-)
- Anyway, I digress, the agencies that support our trails generate some
of their income from sales of guidebooks or databooks. THE Databook
website could have a significant effect on the income they rely on from
these sales, and my intentions are to benefit the hiking communities
not harm them.
Ergo, I hope to work closely
with the agencies maintaining our trails and hope that hikers that join
the various clubs can automatically get access to this site as part of
their payment to the club/organisation. For those hikers not wishing to
join the clubs/organisations I will also offer a direct donation system
for access to this website. In this way I hope to both encourage hikers
to join the clubs and to generate enough funds to pay for the website
hosting costs. Any profits can then be passed back into supporting
maintenance of the trails and offset any negative effects on
conventional guidebooks.
Surely all this
focus on technology is contradictory to being in Nature?
I agree fully. During my
thru-hike the only 'technology' I took was my watch (although I also
started with a CD player). But, you have to plan the hike somehow and
THE Databook hopes to make that easier for you. In todays technological
age though it is inevitable that technology will accompany hikers into
the woods and onto the hills. Be considerate of other hikers and always
focus on enjoying the natural world around you (even when it's
raining), then when appropriate use your technology to keep updated and
safe.
Is THE Databook
for the Appalachian Trail only?
No, definitely not. It is
being designed so that it can host data for multiple trails. During
development though, and as a former AT hiker, I will build and test it
with AT data only. In this respect, I have adopted 'Thru-Hiker' as a
generic term to apply to all hikers who complete the entire length of
any trail in one continuous attempt.
